How Do Fire Extinguishers Work?
What Are The Different Types of Fires?
Referring back to the article on the different types of fire extinguishers, we discussed the contents of each and the suitability of the contents to extinguish fires that are caused by different scenarios.
Remember the FIRE TRIANGLE?
This illustrated that a fire needs 3-elements to ignite and burn.
1- A source of heat (sparks, naked flame, radiant heat etc)
2- A source of readily available fuel (paper, wood, furniture, a petrol can, gas canister, oil, fat, grease etc)
3 – A source of oxygen (the air that surrounds us)
By eliminating one of these elements, a fire will extinguish, or better still, be prevented from starting in the first place.
However, if a fire does break out and you catch it in its early stages, then armed with the correct fire fighting equipment you stand a very good chance of containing and extinguishing the fire. Remember though, if you walk into a room where a fire has already taken hold then shut the door and get everybody out to a safe place.

How Do Fire Extinguishers Work?
Portable fire extinguishers use a variety of contents to extinguish different types of fires.
Principally, these are –
- Water.
- Foam.
- Dry Powders.
- Special Powders.
- Carbon Dioxide.
- Wet Chemical.
- Vaporising Liquids.
Their mode of action is based on the fire triangle above and eliminating one of the elements –
COOLING (to remove the heat) or SMOTHERING (to starve the fire of oxygen)
What Are the Different Types of Fires?
In the UK, there are 5 primary classifications of fire. You need to select an extinguisher that is suitable for the area of your home you wish to protect.
- Class A. Fires involving organic solids (paper, wood, plastic etc)
- Class B. Fires involving a flammable liquid. (petrol, oil, paints) This also includes liquefiable solids (waxes, grease, fats – but not cooking oil or cooking fat). IMPORTANT!
- Class C. Fires involving gases (liquid petroleum gas-LPG, butane and propane)
- Class D. Fires involving certain metals (magnesium, sodium, aluminium).
- Class F. Fires involving deep fat/oil fryers.
There used to be a Class E, which was for electrical fires. Although there are extinguishers that will directly tackle live electrical fires, they are produced mainly for commercial applications such as data centres, telecommunications and computer rooms. They also tend to be expensive and require a certain amount of training to use them effectively.
The advice now for electrical appliance fires in the home (or workplace) is where possible unplug the appliance from the power socket (or switch off at the fuse box). Once the electricity supply to the burning appliance has been isolated then the fire can be treated like any other fire (usually burning plastic, so therefore a Class A fire).
REMEMBER. Electricity and water do not mix and may cause injury or death to the person trying to tackle a burning electrical appliance with the wrong extinguisher.
A further note on using the wrong extinguisher in the home involves burning cooking oil or cooking fat in a kitchen fire.
Class F fires involve cooking oil and fat. However, an extinguisher made solely for a Class F fire is very expensive, requires regular maintenance and is aimed at commercial kitchen use.
Where a fire breaks out in the home involving cooking fats and oils, then the best solution is the use of a Fire Blanket, and we will review these further down.
