Is damage to the eardrum permanent?

Noise induced hearing loss can be best described as slow hearing loss as it damages the small hair cells surrounding the inner ear, or cochlea. Damage is often cumulative and permanent.

The tell tale sign of noise induced hearing loss is general conversation sounding fuzzy and less clear but not necessarily quieter. The conversation can still be heard but the clarity of the words are less distinct.

However, you can’t tell a damaged ear or affected hearing by looking at it. The ear looks perfectly normal and suffers no pain or discomfort. Therefore it is very difficult to predict or notice its cumulative effects, other than by specialist hearing testing.

All this is very different from damage caused to the ear drum by a sudden loud noise which can cause extreme pain and discomfort.

Often when the ear drum is damaged it can repair itself, or sometimes it requires a surgical procedure to repair it, but often this is temporary damage.
